Shirley Jackson featured on Radio 4’s Haunted Women

Radio 4 interviewed Shirley Jackson’s son, Laurence Jackson Hyman, for Haunted Women, an exploration of how women have used the form the ghost story as a lens to portray their experiences.

Hyman reads from the opening chapter of The Haunting of Hill House and discusses the continuing relevancy of Jackson’s work. We also hear from Jackson’s biographer, Ruth Franklin, who interprets Hill House in the context of Jackson’s often troubled marriage and anxieties about losing her identity.

The programme also features contributions from Susan Hill, Melissa Edmundson Makala, Mariana Enriquez and Daisy Johnson. The programme, first broadcast in 2019, was repeated this week and is currently available to listen or download on BBC Sounds.
