Our BookTalk schedule for 2018 will begin with The Facts of Life, a graphic novel and memoir by Bristol artist and writer, Paula Knight, which “thoughtfully challenges the societal notion that to live a life without children is to live a lesser life” (Aminatta Forna, writer). The Facts of Life was published in 2017 by Myriad Editions (UK) and Penn State University Press (USA), and was named as one of the year’s best graphic novels by the Irish Examiner.
We are excited to have Paula joining us via video link to discuss her book. Following Paula’s introduction, we will hear from two speakers from Cardiff University to discuss the main themes of this text:
- Dr Lise El Refaie (Centre for Language and Communication Research, Cardiff University), an expert in visual communication, will discuss some formal aspects of the book;
- Dr Sofia Gameiro (School of Psychology, Cardiff University), an expert in psychological aspects of fertility treatment, will discuss her work on fertility.
The speakers will present and there will be plenty of opportunity for audience questions and discussion. To make the most of the session, you may like to read The Facts of Life before the event.
As usual, the main event will be preceded by a reception with tea, coffee and biscuits at 6.30pm in Cardiff University’s School of Optometry and Vision Sciences, Maindy Road, Cardiff CF24 4HQ.
